Kamal Hassan began his career as a child actor. Besides acting he started to work as a choreographer in films when he was young. He developed under the great influence of director K. Balachander and in 1978 Kamal Hassan became famous acting in K. Balachander's Maro Charithra. His two best films of the 1980s are Sagara Sangama and Swati Mutyam. Since then he has acted in more than 120 films in all south Indian languages and in Hindi, where he made his remarkable appearance in Dimple Kapadia's big comeback film Saagar opposite Rishi Kapoor. Since the mid 1990s he has also produced, scripted and directed movies. His production Hey Ram starring Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukherjee and, of course, himself is a surprising film on the conflict between Gandhi's supporters of non-violence and radical movements around the time of India's independence.

Noted Tamil actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan was conferred an honorary doctorate by the Sathyabhama deemed university at a star- studded event here. Kamal received the doctorate dressed appropriately in a red convocation gown. Receiving the degree from the university's chancellor Jeppiar on what was the 88th birth anniversary of the late thespian-politician M G Ramachandran, Kamal said it was the most joyous moment in his life. "I am proud to be honoured by intellectuals, learned men and literates even though I am illiterate, " said the versatile actor, whose recent Vasoolraja MBBS has been a huge hit. Among those who praised Kamal's multi-faceted capabilities was director K Balachander, who introduced the actor to Hindi audiences in Ek Duje Ke Liye in 1970s. "Gone are the days when I taught him to act, now, I want him to teach me to direct, " Balachander said. An emotional Kamal responded by saying: "As a son it is my duty to say that it is he (Balachander) who had made me an actor."

The actor watched the special premiere of the film with media persons at Rejoice, and another premiere organised for the film industry later in the evening.
